I read about this in a magazine on my way to work, then went online to find pictures. Locals in Monroe, Ohio nicknamed the 62-foot high statue “Touchdown Jesus.” The scale of it is so bizarre that it makes the trees and the church behind it look like miniatures. The pose is also unusual, and is completely different from the flat, featureless Christ faces you see on crosses and statues elsewhere. It reminds me of this Holocaust memorial in Florida, where instead of symbols or smooth, gentle curves, it has writhing bodies with wretched faces, mouths open, staring upwards. That is what any monument to suffering should look like. Judy Pochard has some nice photos of Touchdown Jesus, where you can see him reflected in the church’s baptismal pool.
